Most great philosophers would say helping you is pointless, that you can't try to be good, especially when your motivations are so obviously corrupt.
—Chidi

Chapter 2: Flying is the 2nd episode of Season 1 of The Good Place.

Plot[]

Eleanor tries to prove to Chidi that she is worthy of his help. Meanwhile, Tahani and Jianyu try to help Michael feel better about the unknown flaw in his Neighborhood.

Summary[]

Eleanor avoids suspicion in the aftermath of the chaos, and Michael fears he has failed in his first big project. Tahani organizes a clean up day, but anyone who volunteers will miss out on the opportunity to learn how to fly.

Chidi agrees to teach Eleanor how to be a good person, and his first assignment requires her to volunteer in the garbage clean-up. She begrudgingly agrees to it and starts helping out, but when she hears how amazing flying is she hides the trash to go join everyone else, causing a trash storm to occur. As a result, Chidi loses faith in her. It turns out this was a regular occurence in Eleanor's life, where she habitually shirked the responsibility of acting as a designated driver for her drinking buddies.

That night, Eleanor feels guilty and cleans up the whole neighborhood herself. Upon seeing this, Chidi agrees to continue to help her.

A note is slipped under Eleanor's door, saying that she doesn't belong in The Good Place. Realizing someone else knows her secret, she panics.

Trivia[]

  • This is the lowest rated episode of Season 1 with a rating of 7.4 on IMDb.
  • Tahani says she is the goddaughter of Princess Diana, and later she says she's the goddaughter of Maggie Smith. This is correct because in the Church of England every child should have at least three godparents: two of the same sex as the child, and at least one of the opposite sex.
  • This is the first episode in which Tahani name-drops celebrities. She mentions Princess Diana, Johnny Depp, and Cindy Crawford.
  • Michael's yogurt is CGI, whereas Tahani's is a real prop.
  • To fly, residents stand on a platform and raise their fist up, somewhat like Superman.
