Chapter 30: The Snowplow is the 4th episode of Season 3 of The Good Place.

Plot[]

A surprising announcement from one of the humans threatens to dissolve the group.

Summary[]

Michael and Janet are able to escape from the Judge to make their way to Earth, albeit with limited powers, to oversee the progress of the four humans directly. With those limited powers, Michael sees their main job as analogous to a snowplow: not to intervene directly, but to clear a path for the four to continue their time together which Michael sees as being the key. Being snowplows has unintended consequences which brings up the larger question for Michael and Janet of how much they can or should meddle in the lives of the four, as opposed to getting them together to figure things out for themselves.

Michael and Janet return to Earth after having escaped Judge Gen. They're freaking out when the key to the doorway to Earth starts ringing. Judge Gen's image gets projected onto a nearby wall.

Judge Gen tells them that they better not come back to the afterlife because when they do she'll be waiting for them.

Michael and Janet commandeer an office in the Journalism department so that they can keep the group intact and monitor their progress. Janet has installed cameras and microphones so that they can spy on the group.

Chidi informs the group that Trevor will no longer be part of the study. This is due to an e-mail that Michael wrote to Chidi telling him that Trevor is too stupid and ugly to be a part of the study.

Three months later, Eleanor tells Chidi that she's broke and is looking for a part-time job. Michael thinks that a job is going to take away from her improvement so he and Janet go to buy Eleanor a lottery scratch-off ticket.

Janet uses her brain to pick the winning ticket. Eleanor returns to the study group and tells them that she found the ticket outside of her apartment building and won $18,000 dollars.

Three months after that, Jason is upset. It's hard to watch the Jaguar game because of the time difference. Tahani offers to watch the game with him. Jason says he'll see her this weekend. Tahani confides in Eleanor that she's only watching the game with Jason because she's horny.

Michael believes that this hookup could tear this group apart. Michael decides instead to find Tahani a more suitable paramour. Tahani runs into an old friend at a bar and they start to talk. Jason joins a jaguar fan club.

Six months later, Eleanor says that everything in their lives has improved including the computers that they are using. Tahani reveals that Larry has proposed to her and that they are moving back to England. Tahani invites them to her engagement party. Janet thinks that maybe they should let the group go their separate ways and hope they learn enough to get themselves into the Good Place.

Michael says no that they must convince Larry to stay in Australia. Larry doesn't go for it. Eleanor is concerned about replacing Tahani. Chidi tells Eleanor that they're at a natural stopping point so there really is no need to replace Tahani. That now they have to look over the results and maybe try the study out again with a new group.

Michael is upset that the whole group is splitting up. Michael goes to talk to Eleanor and tries to convince her to speak up about the study ending. Tahani shows the group that she had a cake made with their image on it. Eleanor tells the group that she isn't ready for the study to end and asks the group to stay here and keep it going.

Chidi says no so Eleanor starts saying some mean things about the group and plunges her hand into the cake destroying the image. Later, Simone finds Eleanor outside waiting for a taxi. Eleanor asks Simone why she said all of that and Simone says that she is scared of going back to being alone.

Eleanor goes back inside and apologizes for freaking out. She tells them that she's really going to miss them. Tahani comes up with the idea for them to meet once a year so that the Brain-y Bunch never dies. They agree to meet next year in Jacksonville.

Janet tells Michael that they have to trust the humans to make progress on their own. Janet says he can't reset things like he did in his neighborhood and Michael tells her that she just gave him the craziest idea. He's going to open the door and go to Judge Gen's office and reset everything again. Janet is against it but Michael convinces her to go along with his plan. As they open the doorway they realize that Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani have been listening to them. Eleanor asks what the doorway is.
