The experiment on self-improvement in the afterlife begins. Shawn repeatedly tries to sabotage the experiment, first by sending a demon to impersonate one of the test subjects, and then by having a Bad Janet impersonate Janet. Once these deceptions have been uncovered, the four human test subjects are Chidi himself, Simone, gossip columnist John, and entitled chauvinist Brent. Eleanor and the rest of the team encourage the four to become friends, study ethics together, and improve as people. By the conclusion of the year-long experiment, all but Brent have shown moral improvement, and even Brent shows potential for change at the last minute. The Judge decides that the afterlife system is indeed flawed—but to mend it, all of humanity must be erased from existence.

Season 4 of the comedy television series The Good Place premiered on NBC on September 26, 2019.[2]

Synopsis

The experiment on self-improvement in the afterlife begins. Shawn repeatedly tries to sabotage the experiment, first by sending a demon to impersonate one of the test subjects, and then by having a Bad Janet impersonate Janet. Once these deceptions have been uncovered, the four human test subjects are Chidi himself, Simone, gossip columnist John, and entitled chauvinist Brent. Eleanor and the rest of the team encourage the four to become friends, study ethics together, and improve as people. As of July 20, 2019 the series finale had been written with a table-read for the episode scheduled to take place on Monday, July 22.[4] Furthermore, the cast were very happy to see the series end on its own terms and think the ending is great. D'Arcy Carden said the finale is "sad as hell. We can say it’s great, but it sucks!"[5]

Kristen Bell is directing an episode this season, as are the script supervisor and director. Kristen has praised Ken Garoo for his work on the show, and his ability "to empower people around him" and always seeing the potential in people and cultivating it.[6]

A new version of Janet is likely to be met in this season, as hinted by Ken Garoo.[7]
